Byrnes, Andrew,

International law in the new age of globalization / edited by Andrew Byrnes, Mika Hayashi, Chris Michaelsen.

Leiden : Martinus Nijhoff Publishers, 2013.

Abstract: This collection brings together a series of essays which address some of the challenges that globalization poses to the international legal order. The book examines the interaction of globalization and international law through four sub-themes: the adaptation of classical international legal tools to regulate and adjudicate community interests and conflicts in the era of globalization; coordinating dialogues and governance strategies within and between international legal systems and institutions; globalization and the diversification of actors; and the exposure of State sovereignty to private actors and the need to preserve the regulatory powers of States. The volume will be of interest to international law scholars, practitioners and students, as well as to those working in the fields of international relations and globalization.

Institutions of the Asia-Pacific : ASEAN, APEC, and beyond / Mark Beeson.

New York : Routledge, 2009.

Abstract: The Asia-Pacific is arguably the most important, but also the most complex and contested, region on the planet. Containing three of the world's largest economies and some of its most important strategic relationships, the region's capacity of regional elites to promote continuing economic development whilst simultaneously maintaining peace and stability will be one of the defining challenges of the twenty-first century international order. Intuitively, we might expect regional institutions to play a major role in achieving this. Yet one of the most widely noted characteristics of the Asia-Pacific region has been its relatively modest levels of institutional development thus far. However, things are changing: as individual economies in the Asia-Pacific become more deeply integrated, there is a growing interest in developing and adding to the institutions that already exist. "Institutions of the Asia-Pacific" examines how this region is developing, and what role established organisations like APEC and new bodies like ASEAN are playing in this process. An expert in the field, Mark Beeson introduces the contested nature of the very region itself - should it be the 'Asia-Pacific' or 'East Asia' to which we pay most attention and expect to see most institutional development. By placing these developments in historical context, he reveals why the very definition of the region remains unsettled and why the political, economic and strategic relations of this remarkably diverse region remain fraught and difficult to manage.

The evolution of EU law / edited by Paul Craig and Grâainne de Bâurca.

2nd ed.

New York : Oxford University Press, 2011.

Abstract: The European Union has undergone major changes in the last decade, including Treaty reform, and a significant expansion of activity in foreign and security policy, and justice and home affairs. In the first edition of this influential textbook, a team of leading lawyers and political scientists reflected upon the important developments in their chosen area over the time since the EC was formed. This new edition continues this analysis ten years on. Taking into account the social and political background, and without losing sight of the changes that came before, in each chapter the contributors analyze the principle themes and assess the legal and political forces that have shaped its development. Each author addresses a specific topic, event, or theme, from the European Court of Justice to Treaty reform; the enlargement of the EU to administrative law; the effect of EU law on culture to climate change. Together the chapters tell the story of the rapid development of EU law - its past, present, and future.

Chalmers, Damian.

European Union law : cases and materials / Damian Chalmers, Gareth Davies, Giorgio Monti.

2nd ed.

New York : Cambridge University Press, 2010.

Abstract: Since its publication in 2006 European Union Law quickly established itself as one of the leading textbooks on the market. When it was first published, it offered a lucid account of the law of the European Union still reeling from the 'failure' of the Constitutional Treaty. With the ever changing European landscape a detailed postscript to the first edition is very timely. This supplement provides updating material to the main text, arranged to follow the current chapter structure. Its unique narrative approach, which mirrors the main text's design and organisation, allows students to link updating material with ease. Examining the road to the Lisbon Treaty and the recasting of the borders of the European Union, it offers the most current survey of the law of the Union.

The Oxford handbook of international human rights law / edited by Dinah Shelton.

First edition.

Abstract: The Oxford Handbook of International Human Rights Law provides a comprehensive and original overview of one of the fundamental topics within international law. It contains substantial new essays by more than forty leading experts in the field, giving students, scholars, and practitioners a complete overview of the issues that inform research, as well as a 'map' of the debates that animate the field. Each chapter features a critical and up-to-date analysis of the current state of debate and discussion, assessing recent work and advancing the understanding of all aspects of this developing area of international law. The Handbook consists of 39 chapters, divided into seven parts. Parts I and II explore the foundational theories and the historical antecedents of human rights law from a diverse set of disciplines, including the philosophical, religious, biological, and psychological origins of moral development and altruism, and sociological findings about cooperation and conflict. Part III focuses on the law-making process and categories of rights. Parts IV and V examine the normative and institutional evolution of human rights, and discuss this impact on various doctrines of general international law. The final two parts are more speculative, examining whether there is an advantage to considering major social problems from a human rights perspective and, if so, how that might be done: Part VI analyses current problems that are being addressed by governments, both domestically and through international organizations, and issues that have been placed on the human rights agenda of the United Nations, such as state responsibility for human rights violations and economic sanctions to enforce human rights; Part VII then evaluates the impact of international human rights law over the past six decades from a variety of perspectives. The Handbook is an invaluable resource for scholars, students, and practitioners of international human rights law. It provides the reader with new perspectives on international human rights law that are both multidisciplinary and geographically and culturally diverse.

Whistleblowing in the world : government policy, mass media and the law / Carmen R. Apaza, Yongjin Chang, editors.

Cham, Switzerland : Palgrave Macmillan [2017]

Abstract: This book deploys an original comparative framework, as well as archival and pattern-matching research methodologies, to analyze whistleblowing cases from Peru, South Korea, Thailand and the United States of America and to ascertain factors that make for effective whistleblowing. After examining the cases, the study concludes that external whistleblowing, extensive mass media coverage, and strong evidence are essential components of effective whistleblowing. When there is a lack of proper legal protection, whistleblowers experience brutal retaliation, even though their actions are successful in stopping wrongdoing and promoting change in the public sector. Carmen R. Apaza is Professor at Universidad San Martin de Porres, Peru. Her research interests include corruption in government, public sector reforms and development. She has held managerial positions in the public sector in Peru and served as Principal Expert in Public Administration for the Organization of American States. She has taught at American University, City University of New York and Eastern Washington University. Yongjin Chang is Assistant Professor at the Graduate School of International Relations of International University of Japan. He received his PhD in public administration from the School of Public Affairs at American University in 2008 and worked as research professor at Korea University from 2010 to 2015. .

The International Imperative in Higher Education / Philip G. Altbach.

Rotterdam : Sense Publishers c2013

Global perspectives on higher education

Abstract: 21st century higher education faces immense changes--from the broad impact of globalization to the implications of massification and the growth of enrollments worldwide. The International Imperative in Higher Education focuses on most of the central elements affecting universities worldwide. Included among the themes analyzed are global issues such as corruption, the continuing impact of the brain drain and the phenomenon of brain exchange, the role of English in internationalization, changes in the environment for publishing and knowledge distribution, and academic freedom. The specific elements of internationalization, such as growing commercialization, and the role of agents and recruiters as a part of global student flows are considered. The role of the academic profession in a rapidly changing university environment is also discussed. Special attention is paid to China and India, the world's two largest academic systems, and the specific challenges faced by them. This book consists of 40 concise essays analyzing key aspects of global higher education. They bring together broad analysis and an underlying concern for the public good aspects of higher education in a comparative and international framework.

Mindstorms : children, computers, and powerful ideas / Seymour Papert.

2nd ed. / with an introduction by John Sculley and a new preface by the author.

New York : Basic Books, c1993.

Abstract: Mindstorms has two central themes: that children can learn to use computers in a masterful way and that learning to use computers can change the way they learn everything else. Even outside the classroom, Papert had a vision that the computer could be used just as casually and as personally for a diversity of purposes throughout a person's entire life. Seymour Papert makes the point that in classrooms saturated with technology there is actually more socialization and that the technology often contributes to greater interaction among students and among students and instructors.

I cinesi sono differenti / Marco Croci ; prefazione di Boris Biancheri.

1. ed. italiana.

Milano : F. Brioschi, 2011.

Abstract: "Mutazioni culturali di straordinaria portata si stanno manifestando in questi anni in Cina.

Stoichi÷tæa, Victor Ieronim.

A short history of the shadow / Victor I. Stoichita ; [translated by Anne-Marie Glasheen].

London : Reaktion Books, 1999.

Abstract: In this investigative tour de force, Victor I. Stoichita untangles the history of one of the most enduring technical and symbolic challenges to beset Western artists - the depiction and meanings of shadows. The representation of shadow, and especially of cast shadow, is as old as art itself, for according to classical writers art was born when the outline of a human shadow thrown onto a wall was first traced out in order to capture it in the form of a silhouette. But the history of the shadow is properly the history of light versus dark, for in addition to indicating relief and volume or the times of day, shadows can intimate subtler interior realities - from states of mind to the state of the soul. According to J. C. Lavater in the 18th century, for example, it was the shadow of the face, not the face itself, that was the soul's reflection. More recently Andy Warhol, in his Shadows canvases, and Joseph Beuys have in turn explored the idea of the shadow as the hyper-realized revelation of utter human emptiness and as the self's awesomely powerful Doppelganger. Stoichita's compelling account of the shadow and Western art, which draws on texts by Renaissance artist-authors like Vasari and Cennini, folk tales, fairy tales and classical myths, works by van Eyck, Poussin, Malevich, De Chirico, Picasso and other masters, German Expressionist cinema, photography and child psychology, is a wholly original incursion into a subject that for centuries has challenged the very meaning of art as representation.
