Dordrecht ; Boston : Kluwer Academic Publishers, c2002.

Studies in cognitive systems ; v. 28

Abstract: These precybernetic projects can be considered as steps towards the discovery of a simulative methodology that has been fully developed by these research programs, and that shares some of their central goals and key methodological proposals." "The book provides a valuable text for undergraduate and graduate courses on the historical and theoretical issues of Cognitive Science, Artificial Intelligence, Psychology, Neuroscience and the Philosophy of Mind. The book should also prove interesting to researchers in these fields, who will find in it analyses of certain crucial issues in both the earlier and more recent history of their disciplines, as well as interesting overall insights into the current debate on the nature of the mind.

The poet's wisdom : the humanists, the church, and the formation of philosophy in the early Renaissance / by T. Kircher.

Leiden ; Boston : Brill, 2006.

Brill's studies in intellectual history, ; v. 133

Abstract: The book explores the philosophical thinking of Petrarch and Boccaccio in contrast to the writings of contemporary mendicants. Examining both Latin and vernacular works, it investigates how these humanists poetically express the temporal, subjective, and emotional quality of moral sensibility, in a way that shifts to the reader the weight of discerning the ethical message. The book centers its analysis on a series of paradoxes pondered by these humanists: the self that changes yet persists over time; the awareness of self-deception; the individual's validation of authority; and the ethics of pleasure. This study is valuable to those interested in Renaissance philosophy, literature, religion, and the history of ideas.

The origin and the overcoming of evil and suffering in the world religions / edited by Peter Koslowski.

Dordrecht ; Boston : Kluwer Academic, c2001.

A Discourse of the world religions ; 2

Abstract: All religions face the challenge of explaining, in view of God's goodness, the existence of evil and suffering in the world. They must develop theories of the origin and the overcoming of evil and suffering. The explanations in Buddhism, Christianity, Hinduism, Islam, and Judaism of evil and suffering and their origin, as well as these world religions' theories of how to overcome evil and suffering, differ from one another, but are also similar in many respects. The human person is always considered to be the origin of evil, and also to be the focus of aspirations to be able to overcome it. The conviction that evil and suffering are not original and can be overcome is characteristic of and common to the religions. The explanations of the origin of evil are closely related to the explanations of the continuation and propagation of evil in human persons, in nature, and in our technology and culture that have been developed in the religions - in Christianity, for example, as the doctrine of original sin. Finally, the world religions are concerned with how to cope with suffering and offer guidance for overcoming evil and suffering. Leading scholars of five world religions, Buddhism, Islam, Christianity, Judaism, and Hinduism, have created with this volume a first-hand source of information, which enables the reader to gain a better understanding of these religions' central teachings about the origin and the overcoming of evil and suffering.

This atlas summarizes the outcomes of the European Values Study, combined with results from the World Values Survey, two projects that have measured values over the past three decades. The European Values Study project is run by researchers from 33 countries and is administered by Tilburg University, the Netherlands. The Atlas presents European ideas and beliefs in the form of graphs, charts and maps. Digital enlightenment yearbook 2013 : the value of personal data \ edited by Mireille Hildebrandt, Kieron O'Hara, Michael Waidner.

Amsterdam [etc.] : IOS Press, 2013.

Digital enlightenment forum.

Abstract: The value of personal data has traditionally been understood in ethical terms as a safeguard for personality rights such as human dignity and privacy. However, we have entered an era where personal data are mined, traded and monetized in the process of creating added value - often in terms of free services including efficient search, support for social networking and personalized communications. This volume investigates whether the economic value of personal data can be realized without compromising privacy, fairness and contextual integrity. It brings scholars and scientists from the disciplines of computer science, law and social science together with policymakers, engineers and entrepreneurs with practical experience of implementing personal data management. The resulting collection will be of interest to anyone concerned about privacy in our digital age, especially those working in the field of personal information management, whether academics, policymakers, or those working in the private sector. IOS Press is an international science, technical and medical publisher of high-quality books for academics, scientists, and professionals in all fields.

The value of culture : on the relationship between economics and arts / edited by Arjo Klamer.

Amsterdam : Amsterdam University Press, c1996.

Abstract: Culture manifests itself in everything human, including the ordinary business of everyday life. Culture and art have their own value, but economic values are also constrained. Art sponsorships and subsidies suggest a value that exceeds market price. So what is the real value of culture? Unlike the usual focus on formal problems, which has 'de-cultured' and 'de-moralized' the practice of economics, this book brings together economists, philosophers, historians, political scientists and artists to try to sort out the value of culture. This is a book not only for economists and social scientists, but also for anybody actively involved in the world of the arts and culture.

Arts under pressure : promoting cultural diversity in the age of globalization / Joost Smiers.

London ; New York, NY : Zed Books, 2003.

Abstract: Arts Under Pressure analyses the relevant forces behind decision making in cultural matters worldwide under the influence of economic globalisation. The book deals with all the arts, in all parts of the world and focuses on the cycle of creation, production, distribution, promotion, reception and influence. It asks: who has the power to decide what reaches audiences, in what quantities, with what contents and surrounded by what kinds of ambiances? Refuting the 'natural' existence of a mass culture, Arts Under Pressure argues that globally dominant artistic creations are produced, distributed and promoted on a mass scale that destroys the diversity any society desperately needs. Smiers argues that countries must take culture out of the grip of the WTO and sign a new International Convention on Cultural Diversity. Smiers concludes with a completely new vision of copyright, advantageous to artists, third world countries and the public domain.

The law and practice of the United Nations / by Benedetto Conforti

3. revised edition

Leiden ; Boston : Martinus Nijhoff, c2005

Abstract: This fully up-dated, third revised edition of Conforti's thought-provoking and challenging textbook, "The Law and Practice of the United Nations", provides a comprehensive legal analysis of problems concerning membership, the structure of UN organs, their functions and their acts, taking into consideration the text of the Charter, its historical origins, and, particularly, the practice of the organs. Its main focus is on the practice of the Security Council. In particular the action of the Security Council under Chapter VII has been taken into account. The legal literature on Chapter VII - a literature which has grown enormously in recent times - has also been considered. The fact that the legal aspects of the action or the inaction of the Security Council have been discussed to an unusually large extent by ordinary people at the time of the war against Iraq and even later is worth noting. The importance of the role of the United Nations, and the content of the rules governing it, has become a leitmotiv of all debates on international politics. Consequently, the opinion often held in the past, according to which it was useless to deal with the legal aspects of the United Nations activity, can be considered as obsolete.

Fifty years of European integration : foundations and perspectives / edited by Andrea Ott & Ellen Vos.

The Hague, The Netherlands : T.M.C. Asser Press, c2009.

Abstract: On the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the European Economic Community and the 15th anniversary of the European Union, this book brings to the fore 50 years of European integration. It reflects on the foundations of these entities, their present state and their future. It focuses on three important themes that have gained particular importance throughout the years: (1) the constitutional architecture of the Treaties and the role of the institutions and other bodies within the institutional setting; (2) the need for further integration and the possible limits or needs for a more differentiated approach to integration, and (3) the EU's borders and identity, including the issues of enlargement, European neighbourhood policy and EU citizenship. In conclusion, the book raises the question whether the European integration process can serve as a model for other regional integration processes. Hence, it compares the South American, African and Asian integration processes and tries to detect commonalities and differences in relation to the European Union integration process. The unique character of this book will be particularly appealing to practitioners working in or with the EU institutions and law, both inside the EU as outside, in America, Africa and Asia. It is a valuable source of information for master and graduate students in European law and European studies, and those interested in other regional integration processes. The Editors of the book are both affiliated to Maastricht University, Maastricht, The Netherlands, and working in the department of European and International Law. Andrea Ott as a Senior Lecturer in European Union Law and Ellen Vos as a Professor of European Union Law.

The responsibility to protect and international law / edited by Alex J. Bellamy, Sara E. Davies, Luke Glanville.

Leiden Boston : Martinus Nijhoff Publishers, 2011.

Abstract: Predictions that globalization would undermine territorial attachments and weaken the sources of territorial conflict have not been realized in recent decades. Globalization may have produced changes in territoriality and the functions of borders, but it has not eliminated them. The contributors to this volume examine this relationship, arguing that much of the change can be attributed to sources other than economic globalization. Bringing the perspectives of law, political science, anthropology, and geography to bear on the complex causal relations among territoriality, conflict, and globalization, leading contributors examine how territorial attachments are constructed, why they have remained so powerful in the face of an increasingly globalized world, and what effect continuing strong attachments may have on conflict. They argue that territorial attachments and people's willingness to fight for territory depends upon the symbolic role it plays in constituting people's identities, and producing a sense of belonging in an increasingly globalized world.

International handbook of higher education / edited by James J. F. Forest and Philip G. Altbach

Dordrecht : Springer

Abstract: Higher education is a truly global activity, built around the intersections of international knowledge networks in which institutions, faculty and students explore, create and share knowledge. Virtually all colleges and universities stem from a common organizational model and intellectual history, and academic disciplines are defined worldwide in common terms – the study of sociology in Japan or Germany is seen roughly the same as the study of sociology in Canada or the United States. The purpose of this publication is to provide a central, authoritative reference source on the most essential topics of higher education. The International Handbook of Higher Education combines a rich diversity of scholarly perspectives with a wide range of internationally derived descriptions and analyses. Chapters in the first volume cover central themes in the study of higher education, while contributors to the second volume focus on contemporary higher education issues within specific countries or regions. Together, these volumes provide a centralized, easily accessible, yet scholarly source of information. Research scholars and graduate level students in higher education and related fields will find the Handbook useful for advancing their exploration of these central issues, while policymakers and academic administrators will find the thoughtful essays on a particular topic useful for decision-making. Overall, this Handbook provides a centralized collection of scholarship on an essential worldwide social institution.

Global Opportunities and Challenges for Higher Education Leaders: Briefs on Key Themes / Philip G. Altbach.

Rotterdam : Sense Publishers c2014

Global perspectives on higher education

Abstract: Higher education leaders today recognize the need to develop an international strategy for their institutions but may lack the knowledge and perspective required to inform good decisions. Institutions must create educational environments where students will begin to appreciate the complexity of global integration and develop skills to navigate it successfully. International outreach and initiatives enrich institutional culture but must be based on good information and analysis. To address this need, the American Council on Education (ACE) and the Boston College Center for International Higher Education (CIHE) launched a publication and webinar series titled International Briefs for Higher Education Leaders. The purpose of the series is to assist campus leaders in their efforts to make sense of a broad and complex set of issues inherent in the internationalization of American higher education today. In an era of "information overload" and in light of the realities of time constraints faced by busy institutional leaders, each Brief publication is organized around one clearly defined topic. This book features the key themes of global engagement, China, India, and the "southern cone" in Latin America.

From dependence to autonomy : the development of Asian universities / edited by Philip G. Altbach and Viswanathan Selvaratnam.

Dordrecht ; Boston : Kluwer Academic, c1989.

Abstract: This book is an example of an international editorial enterprise. The two editors, located in the United States and Singapore, coordinated a team of authors in ten countries. Linked by common concerns, the lengthy process of preparing such a complex volume proved to be a pleasantly cooperative task - proof that there is a kind of invisible college of colleagues working on similar topics in different countries. This book is also an indication that scholars from the Third World and the industrialized nations can work together in a spirit of equality and understanding. This project has an interesting origin. It was first discussed at a conference on ASEAN - American higher education held in Malaysia in 1985, sponsored by the Regional Institute for Higher Education and Development, then headed by V. Selvaratnam and funded by the Asia Foundation and the Lee Foundation. At the time, geographical coverage was to be limited to the ASEAN nations. We also sought external funding, without success, to assist us in developing the project. Due to lack of funding, the project languished for a year. When one of our original participants, Andrew Gonzales of the Philippines, produced an essay, we decided to proceed without funding. We also decided to add several additional key Asian nations that we felt would provide additional analytic scope to the book. The result of this somewhat unusual collaborative effort is this volume.

Medical enhancement and posthumanity / Editors Bert Gordijn, Ruth Chadwick

[Dordrecht, etc.] : Springer, 2008

Abstract: As we are increasingly using new technologies to change ourselves beyond therapy and in accordance with our own desires, understanding the challenges of human enhancement has become one of the most urgent topics of the current age. This volume contributes to such an understanding by critically examining the pros and cons of our growing ability to shape human nature through technological advancements. The authors undertake careful analyses of decisive questions that will confront society as enhancement interventions using bio-, info-, neuro- and nanotechnologies become widespread in the years to come. They provide the reader with the conceptual tools necessary to address such questions fruitfully. What makes the book especially attractive is the combination of conceptual, historical and ethical approaches, which makes it highly original. In addition, the well-balanced structure of the volume allows both favourable and critical views to be voiced. Moreover, the work has a crystal clear structure. As a consequence, the book is accessible to a broad academic audience. The issues raised are of interest to a wide reflective public concerned about science and ethics, as well as to students, academics and professionals in areas such as philosophy, applied ethics, bioethics, medicine and health management.

Trading places : the Netherlandish merchants in early modern Venice / by Maartje van Gelder.

Leiden ; Boston : Brill, 2009.

Abstract: Trading Places is winner of the triennial Historical Research Award of Italy Studies (2012). This book deals with the Netherlandish merchant community in sixteenth- and seventeenth-century Venice. It examines the merchants’ commercial activities, their social and communal relations, as well as their interaction with the Venetian state, which was accustomed to protect its own trade. The Netherlandish merchants in Venice, as part of an extensive international trading network, were ideally placed to connect Mediterranean and Atlantic commerce. They quickly became the most important group of foreign merchants in the city at a time of rapid economic changes. Drawing on a wide variety of primary sources, this book shows how these immigrant traders used their strong commercial position to secure a place in Venice. It demonstrates how the changing balance of international commerce affected early modern Venetian society.

International Arch Bridge Conference <2. ; 1998 ; Venice>

Arch bridges : history, analysis, assessment, maintenance and repair : proceedings of the second international Arch Bridge conference, Venice, Italy, 6-9 october 1998 / edited by Anna Sinopoli

Rotterdam Brookfield : A. A. Balkema, 1998

Abstract: Modern structural engineering surprises us with the mastery and certainty with which it plans and carries out daring projects, such as the most recent metal or concrete bridges, whether they be suspension or arch bridges. On the other hand, little is yet known about the state of knowledge of construction science and techniques which, well before the arrival of modern methods based on the mechanics of deformable continua, made it possible in the past to erect the vaulted masonry structures rthat we have inherited. The fact that these have lasted through many centuries to our time, and are still in a fairly good state of conservation, makes them competitive, as far as stability and durability are concerned, with those constructed in other materials. Although it is known that the equilibrium of the arch is guaranteed by any funicular whatsoever of the loads, contained inside the profile of an arch, finding the unique solution is not such a certainty. In other words, the problem of the equilibrium of vaulted structures is 'Poleni's problem', the one for which the Venetian scientist was able to give an exemplary solution on the occasion of the assessment of the dome of St. Peter's. Arch Bridges focuses on the main aspects of the debate about the masonry arch bridge: History of structural mechanics and construction, theoretical models, analysis for assessment, numerical methods, experimental and non-destructive testing, maintenance and repair are the topics of the Conference. The breadth and variety of the contributions presented and discussed by leading experts from many countries make this volume an authoritative source of up-to-date information.
