Fury : a novel / Salman Rushdie.
1st ed.
New York : Random House, c2001.
Abstract: Fury is the story of a dollmaker whose dolls run wild, of living women turned into dolls and then broken, and of a revolt on the planet's far side led by an army of living dolls. Fury is a novel of an old, deep love gone wrong, of a second, twisted passion rooted in wrongness, and of a third, passionate love that just might turn out right. Fury is a novel of furious energy, a study of the workings of fury at the heart of human lives: the personal fury that poisons human relations, the psychotic fury that fuels murderers, the social fury born of our raised and disappointed hopes, the creative fury that sets free our greatest gifts, the political fury that starts revolutions and burns whole cities down. Fury is a novel of today, an utterly contemporary portrait of life at the beginning of the third millennium, life in New York during an apparently endless time of prosperity that is paradoxically also a time of barrenness in many people's lives, and also in the world-empire that America rules, although it barely knows where it is.

Abstract: This collection attempts to recover the voices of women in antiquity from a variety of perspectives: how they spoke, where they could be heard, and how their speech was adopted in literature and public discourse. Rather than confirming the old model of binary oppositions in which women's speech was viewed as insignificant and subordinate to male discourse, these essays reveal a dynamic and potentially explosive interrelation between women's speech and the realm of literary production, religion, and oratory. The contributors use a variety of methodologies to mine a diverse array of sources, from Homeric epic to fictional letters of the second sophistic period and from actual letters written by women in Hellenistic Egypt to the poetry of Sappho. Throughout, the term "voice" is used in its broadest definition. It includes not only the few remaining genuine women's voices but also the ways in which male authors render women's speech and the social assumptions such representations reflect and reinforce. These essays therefore explore how fictional female voices can serve to negotiate complex social, epistemological, and aesthetic issues. The contributors include Josine Blok, Raffaella Cribiore, Michael Gagarin, Mark Griffith, Andre Lardinois, Richard Martin, Lisa Maurizio, Laura McClure, D. M. O'Higgins, Patricia Rosenmeyer, Marilyn Skinner, Eva Stehle, and Nancy Worman.

Abstract: Metamorphoses--the best-known poem by one of the wittiest poets of classical antiquity--takes as its theme change and transformation, as illustrated by Greco-Roman myth and legend. Melville's new translation reproduces the grace and fluency of Ovid's style, and its modern idiom offers a fresh understanding of Ovid's unique and elusive vision of reality.

Postmodern geography : theory and praxis / edited by Claudio Minca.
Oxford ; Malden, Mass. : Blackwell, 2001.
Abstract: "Postmodern Geography: Theory and Praxis" focuses upon one of the key themes which have served to shape disciplinary debates in geography over the past decade: the role of postmodernity and postmodern interpretations in reconfiguring our ways of framing social enquiry and our readings of space. This edited collection presents numerous perspectives on the implications of the postmodern turn for the praxis of geography. The contributors engage in debate about the epistemological bases of possible new geographical praxes - "other" possible ways of "doing geography" - while also querying the implications of postmodern approaches for geography and geographers' political role. The contributors to the volume include: Denis Cosgrove, Michael Dear, Giuseppe Dematteis, Franco Farinelli, Steven Flusty, Vincenzo Guarrasi, Cindi Katz, Luciana L. Martins, Claudio Minca, Don Mitchell, Gunnar Olsson, Neil Smith and Edward Soja.

Abstract: "British Cultural Studies maps the dynamics of contemporary British culture, seeking to identify its new configurations and to trace the dimensions of its emerging faultlines, including those deriving from the nation's colonial heritage and from the new forms of cultural politics - ethnic, regionalist, environmentalist, and consumerist - which now characterize this increasingly fragmented and diverse nation." "The book includes over thirty essays covering almost every aspect of culture and identity in Britain today and addressing the current transformations of this culture and identity in the context of globalization. The opening section of the book deals with different conceptions of Britishness and identity, including English, Scottish, Irish, Welsh, Asian and Black British identities. Section two then analyses the interplay between tradition and heritage in contemporary culture, whilst the final section looks at the world of lifestyle groups, subcultures, and cultural politics and the way in which they have come in many ways to substitute for notions of Britishness.
Venice transfigured : the myth of Venice in British culture, 1660-1797 / John Eglin.
New York : Palgrave, 2001.
Abstract: This text examines changing representations of Venice and the Venetian Republic in Britain from the 17th century until the collapse of the Serene Republic in 1797, a period in which Venice was an ideological reference point and a potent cultural symbol. In the British political imagination, Venice became an important cultural site where politics and culture converged. This approach incorporates visual culture, festivity and ritual, history and historical myth that illuminates the relationship between political ideology and cultural production.
Gulliver's travels / Jonathan Swift ; edited with an introduction and notes by Robert DeMaria, Jr.
London ; New York : Penguin Books, 2001.
Penguin classics
Abstract: Here comes Swift's classic tale in a gorgeous new clothbound edition. Shipwrecked and cast adrift, Lemuel Gulliver wakes to find himself on Lilliput, an island inhabited by little people, whose height makes their quarrels over fashion and fame seem ridiculous. His subsequent encounters - with the crude giants of Brobdingnag, the philosophical Houyhnhnms and brutish Yahoos - give Gulliver new, bitter insights into human behaviour. Swift's savage satire views mankind in a distorted hall of mirrors as a diminished, magnified and finally bestial species, presenting us with an uncompromising reflection of ourselves.
New Haven London : Yale University Press, 2001
Abstract: This unique and celebrated biography describes how a largely self-educated boy from a small village in Scotland entered the world of scholarship and became the first editor of the Oxford English Dictionary and a great lexicographer. It also provides an absorbing account of how the dictionary was written, the personalities of the people working on it, and the endless difficulties that nearly led to the whole enterprise being abandoned.
The Philosophy of language / edited by A.P. Martinich.
4th ed.
New York : Oxford University Press, 2001.
Abstract: The essential text for courses in the field, The Philosophy of Language is as excellent introduction to such fundamental questions as: What is meaning? How is linguistic communication possible? What is the nature of language? What is the relation between language and the world? And How do metaphors work? Appearing in paperback for the first time, the volume collects 41 of the most important articles in the field, making it the most comprehensive reader of its kind. Selections include classic articles by such distinguished philosophers as Gottlob Frege, Bertrand Russell, J.L. Austin, W.V.O Quine, and P.F. Strawson, as well as more influential work by Saul Kripke, David Kaplan, Donald Davidson, John Searle, and Noam Chomsky. (For this edition, Martinich has added articles by John Stuart Mill, Russell, Searle, John Perry, and Millikan). The selections represent evolving and varying approaches to the subject, with many articles building upon earlier ones or critically discussing them.Eight sections cover the central issues of Truth and Meaning, Speech Acts, Reference and Descriptions, Names and Demonstrations, Propositional Attitudes, Metaphor, Interpretation and Translation, and the Nature of Language. A revised general introduction, and introductions to each of the selections provide background to the issues and explain the connections among them. Gods and mortals : modern poems on classical myths / edited by Nina Kossman.
Oxford ; New York : Oxford University Press, 2001.
Abstract: More than perhaps any other folkloric tradition, whether oral or written, the myths of classical Greece and Rome have survived and pervaded the consciousness of lands far-flung from their source. The mythic world of the ancients, peopled by glamorous gods and unstoppable heroes, in which the mortal and immortal commingled, is even now a living presence in 21st century culture, rather than a literary relic. Whether we know them by their Roman or their Greek names - Artemis or Minerva, Poseidon or Neptune - the figures of these ancietn myths captured the imagination of culture after culture across the globe, inspiring writers, artists, musicians and those of us who comprise the audience for their works. Can it be a coincidence that the greatest poets of the western world have each at one point tried their hand at retellings? Kossman's anthology assembles some of the best of these poems inspired by ancient myths, organizing them by themse, and allowing the reader to compare one against the other - for example, one section assembels poems telling the stories of mythic lovers (Cupid and Psyche, Orpheus and Eurydice); another the many tales of miraculous transformations (Pygmalion and Galatea, Echo and Narcissus). With such a wide variety of the world's best poets to choose from - from all over the world and from any era since classical times - Kossman has had no difficulty creating a literary pantheon; included are D. H. Lawrence, Derek Walcott, Rita Dove, Denise Levertov, Rilke, Pound, and Yeats. The collection should be a treasure for the innumerable debotees of both myth and poetry.

Washington, D.C. : Resources for the Future, c2001.
Abstract: Reauthorization of the Superfund law continues to be a major source of controversy among political leaders and environmental activists. Some seek a major overhaul of the statute, arguing that considerable cleanup still needs to be done. Others oppose major changes, asserting that cleanup is almost complete. One of the most contentious issues in the debate is whether the taxes that once stocked the Superfund Trust Fund need to be reinstated. The answer depends in large part on how much money EPA will need to implement the Superfund program. To inform this discussion, the U.S. Congress asked Resources for the Future (RFF) to estimate the program's future costs. The results of this research are included in Superfund's Future, a book that will become an essential reference for all participants in the debate about one of the nation's most controversial environmental programs.

[Normal, IL] : Dalkey Archive Press, 2001.
Abstract: Composed of seven dark tales, A Tomb for Boris Davidovich presents variations on the theme of political and social self-destruction throughout Eastern Europe in the first half of the twentieth century. The characters in these stories are caught in a world of political hypocrisy, which ultimately leads to death, their common fate. Although the stories Kis tells are based on historical events, the beauty and precision of his prose elevates these ostensibly true stories into works of literary art that transcend the politics of their time.
