Dwyer, Rachel.

All you want is money, all you need is love : sexuality and romance in modern India / Rachel Dwyer.

London ; New York : Cassell, 2000.

Abstract: An examination of India's bourgeois, its lifestyle and aspirations as manifested in fiction and film. It begins by looking at heroines and notions of idealized womanhood in a historical perspective, and examines how these are reworked in modern narratives, how conflicts are resolved and new models developed. A major theme is the redefinition of love and romance among the Indian middle classes, as part of the creation of a bourgeois individual revolving around love, romance and marriage. The book concentrates on the most radical of India's metropolitan bourgeoisies, that of the city of Mumbai (Bombay).

Archer, Jeffrey, (1940-)

To cut a long story short / Jeffrey Archer.

New York : HarperCollins, c2000.

Abstract: The latest short-story collection from Britain's bestselling writer, 'the greatest storyteller of our age'. The latest collection from the master storyteller. The fourteen -- all new -- stories show Jeffrey Archer's great skills with a wide variety of character, of subject and of setting, but all with that trademark twist in the tail. Every reader will have their own favourites: the choices run from love at first sight across the railway tracks to the cleverest of confidence tricks, from the quirks of the legal profession to the creative financial talents of a member of Her Majesty's diplomatic service. One of the most intriguing describes a woman who only appears to her lover every six years. And one of the most powerful is the story of a wealthy man who declares himself bankrupt in order to discover which of his family and friends will support him. The last story, 'The Grass is Always Greener', is possibly the best piece Archer has written. To Cut a Long Story Short is Jeffrey Archer's fourth story collection, and shows him at the top of his form.

Clarke, Arthur C. (1917-2008.)

The sentinel : the master of science fiction and fantasy / Arthur C. Clarke.

London : HarperCollins Publishers, 2000.

Abstract: The best collection ever of Arthur C. Clarke's short fiction, including the stories on which 2001: A Space Odyssey and Childhood's End were based. The Sentinel is a magnificent retrospective showcase of Arthur C. Clarke's finest shorter fiction. Spanning four decades of writing, this book includes many gems of a genius at the height of his powers. The title piece is the story that inspired 2001. 'Guardian Angel' is a rarely anthologised work that gave birth to Childhood's End, and 'The Songs of Distant Earth' is the original version of Clarke's own favourite novel. Along with other vaulting tales of imagination are fascinating introductions telling the history of each story from conception to completion. From one of the greatest science-fiction writers of all time. The Sentinel is one of those all-too-few collections that must be read, re-read, then treasured.

A nation collapses : the Italian surrender of September 1943 / Elena Agarossi ; translated by Harvey Fergusson II.

Cambridge ; New York : Cambridge University Press, 2000.

Abstract: A Nation Collapses revises the traditional understanding of a critical moment in the history of World War II: the collapse of the Italian fascist regime and Italy's unconditional surrender in September 1943. Drawing on mostly unpublished documents, the book analyses the secret negotiations between Italy and Britain before the overthrow of Mussolini in July 1943 and finds that both parties negotiated in bad faith and with a great deal of duplicity. The Italians therefore both underestimated the extent of the Allies' strategic commitment in Italy and promised their conquerors a degree of military assistance which they were in no condition to deliver. The situation disintegrated into a civil war as the Anglo-American military government which controlled southern Italy invaded the German-occupied north. Already traumatized by unconditional surrender, Italy now endured a civil war waged by foreign powers on both sides for twenty long and brutal months.

Munn, Mark Henderson.

The school of history : Athens in the age of Socrates / Mark Munn.

Berkeley ; Los Angeles ; London : University of California Press, c2000.

Abstract: History, political philosophy, and constitutional law were born in Athens in the space of a single generation--the generation that lived through the Peloponnesian War (431-404 b.c.e.). This remarkable age produced such luminaries as Socrates, Herodotus, Thucydides, Sophocles, Euripides, Aristophanes, and the sophists, and set the stage for the education and early careers of Plato and Xenophon, among others. The School of History provides the fullest and most detailed intellectual and political history available of Athens during the late fifth century b.c.e., as it examines the background, the context, and the decisive events shaping this society in the throes of war. This expansive, readable narrative ultimately leads to a new understanding of Athenian democratic culture, showing why and how it yielded such extraordinary intellectual productivity. As both a source and a subject, Thucydides' history of the Peloponnesian War is the central text around which the narrative and thematic issues of the book revolve. Munn re-evaluates the formation of the Greek historiographical tradition itself as he identifies the conditions that prompted Thucydides to write--specifically the historian's desire to guide the Athenian democracy as it struggled to comprehend its future. The School of History fully encompasses recent scholarship in history, literature, and archaeology. Munn's impressive mastery of the huge number of sources and publications informs his substantial contributions to our understanding of this democracy transformed by war. Immersing us fully in the intellectual foment of Athenian society, The School of History traces the history of Athens at the peak of its influence, both as a political and military power in its own time and as a source of intellectual inspiration for the centuries to come.

Zuccotti, Susan, (1940-)

Under his very windows : the Vatican and the Holocaust in Italy / Susan Zuccotti.

New Haven : Yale University Press, c2000.

Abstract: Pope Pius XII has often been criticized for his silence during the extermination of European Jewry during World War II. In his defense, some have alleged that the pope was doing a great deal to help the Jews but that his efforts were necessarily behind the scenes. This meticulously researched and balanced book examines exactly what the pope, his advisers, and his assistants at the Vatican Secretariat of State did to help the Jews of Italy. It finds that they did very little. The book begins by discussing prewar Vatican and Jesuit publications, in which Zuccotti uncovers a hitherto unsuspected prevalence of anti-Jewish sentiment. These publications, along with archival documents, indicate that Vatican protests against Italian anti-Jewish laws were limited to measures affecting converts and Jews in mixed marriages with Catholics, as was help with emigration; the papal nuncio's visits to foreign Jews in Italian internment camps did not differ from those to non-Jews and in no way eased their material discomfort; and interventions by diplomats of the Holy See for Jews threatened with deportation were rare, always polite, and seldom decisive. Above all, Zuccotti finds no evidence of a papal directive to church institutions to shelter Jews and much evidence to suggest that the pope remained uninvolved. The notion that Pius XII was benevolent and helpful to Jews behind the scenes proves to be a myth.

Rome open city = Roma cittáa aperta / David Forgacs

London : BFI Pub., 200

BFI film classics

Abstract: "Otto Preminger said the history of the cinema was divided into two eras: one before and one after Rome Open City (Roima citta aperta). Made in 1945, the film is based on events that took place in Rome just one year before, during the Nazi occupation. It made a huge impact on its release, launched the international reputation of its director, Roberto Rossellini, and came to be seen as the founding work of Italian neo-realism." "David Forgacs re-examines the film and its place in Rossellini's career. He reconstructs its production history, its relationship to the events that inspired it and the time in which it was made. He argues that the traditional critical labelling of Rome Open City as the original work of neo-realism fails to capture the film's hybrid and contradictory character. Part documentary record, part patriotic myth, Rome Open City is at once an extraordinarily powerful commemoration of wartime experience and a rhetorical reworking of that experience, using stereotypes and moral polarisations. It is also a unique cinematic depiction of an occupied city."--BOOK JACKET.

Gundle, Stephen, (1956-)

Between Hollywood and Moscow : the Italian communists and the challenge of mass culture, 1943-1991 / Stephen Gundle.

Durham, [N.C.] : Duke University Press, 2000.

American encounters/global interactions

Abstract: n the post-war years, Italy underwent a far-reaching process of industrialisation that transformed the country into a leading industrial power. Throughout most of this period, the Italian Communist Party (PCI) remained a powerful force in local government and civil society. However, as Stephen Gundle observes, the PCI was increasingly faced with challenges posed by modernisation, particularly by mass communication, commercial cultural industries, and consumerism. "Between Hollywood and Moscow" is an analysis of the PCI's attempts to cope with these problems in an effort to maintain its organisation and subculture. Gundle focuses on the theme of cultural policy, discussing how the PCI's political strategies incorporated cultural policies and activities that were intended to respond to the Americanisation of daily life in Italy. In formulating this policy, Gundle contends, the Italian Communists were torn between loyalty to the alternative values generated by the Communist tradition and adaptation to the dominant influences of Italian modernisation. This equilibrium eventually faltered because the attractive aspects of Americanisation and pop culture proved more influential than the PCI's intellectual and political traditions. The first analysis in English of the cultural policies and activities of the PCI, this book will appeal to readers with an interest in modern Italy, the European left, political science, and media studies.

Roberto Rossellini : magician of the real / edited by David Forgacs, Sarah Lutton, and Geoffrey Nowell-Smith.

London : British Film Institute, 2000.

Abstract: A master of modern European cinema and a key figure in the Italian neorealist movement, Roberto Rossellini had one of the longest and most varied careers of all major directors. From "Rome Open City" and "Paisa" through to the "Bergman" classics "Stromboli" and "Journey to Italy" and his later work for television, Rossellini's work and ideas had a profound influence on filmmaking and criticism. This specially commissioned overview of Rossellini's works examines key issues and themes covering all phases of his career.Leading critics from across the world examine, among other issues, the Fascist context of Rossellini's early work, the view of Europe that emerges in his films, the stylistic trajectory of the work through neorealism and beyond and its influence on the French New Wave, the issues of representation that emerge in later films and his extensive work for television. The significance of Rossellini's relationships with Ingrid Bergman and Anna Magnani is discussed and the book also includes a dossier section of materials providing an overview of the most important facts and documents concerning the director.
